The team for Mid and West Wales

Alun Davies

Alun was elected to the National Assembly in May 2007. Alun is originally from Tredegar and was educated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.

After graduating Alun was elected President of the NUS Wales where he led campaigns against the then Conservative Government’s cuts in education funding. Following this he worked as a campaigner for WWF and Oxfam on international environmental and poverty issues which included assignments in Rwanda and the Balkans.

Alun has also enjoyed a successful and high profile career in public and corporate affairs. He was a public relations manager with the Welsh multi-utility, Hyder plc, before being appointed Head of Public Affairs at the UK Atomic Energy Authority. Following this he was appointed to the board of S4C as its Director of Corporate Affairs. Prior to his election Alun was managing director of his own business, Bute Communications. He has worked throughout Europe and the Middle East and has been a regular speaker at international seminars and conferences.

Since being elected to the National Assembly Alun has quickly established himself as an effective speaker and advocate for Mid and West Wales.

Christine Gwyther

Christine Gwyther was born and brought up in Pembroke Dock on the far west of the Mid & West Wales region.

She was educated at Pembroke School and University College Cardiff, moved to London and then moved back home in her twenties when she worked in economic development for Pembrokeshire County Council.

Christine was elected to the Welsh Assembly in 1999 and was a member for eight years. She was agriculture minister and chair of the economic development and transport committee while she was a member and was involved in high profile health campaigns across West Wales.

Christine's job with Alun is running community campaigns, as well as casework and policy development. She is also a member of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Pembroke Dock Town Council, and chairs the steering group of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum.

Marc Tierney

Marc Tierney has worked with Alun Davies since his election in 2007.

Marc hails from Burry Port and now lives with his family in rural west Carmarthenshire. Marc has worked for a number of media organisations in Ireland and England before returning to south west Wales where he has strong connections with the voluntary sector and has worked in politics since 2005.

Marc says: "My role is pretty varied, accompanying Alun on visits across the region as well as preparing news releases for the local and national media. I also handle a lot of constituency case work and am usually the first point of contact for anyone wishing to meet with Alun during one of his regular surgery dates or through written correspondence."

"The mid and west region has some of the most fantastic landscapes in the country with three national parks and a stunning coastline. But the challenges of living and working in mid and west Wales are plenty. Alun is working on a range of campaigns to improve the way we live and work. So explore the website and get in touch."

Marc is based in the Carmarthen constituency office at 32 Blue Street, Carmarthen, SA31 3LE.

Rhys Williams

Rhys Williams has an honours degree in English from the University of Exeter after which he attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia, U.S.A. before going on to the University of Nottingham where he gained a P.G.C.E. In 1990 he became a Wales Officer of the National Union of Teachers and from 2000 to 2002 was seconded to the Cabinet of the Welsh Assembly Government as a speechwriter. From 2002 until 2008 he worked for NUT Cymru as Communications, Campaigns and Political Officer. He broadcasts frequently in Welsh and in English on radio and television.

In west Wales he was involved in the community theatre in Felinfach, Ceredigion. In Cardiff, he has recently been invited to join the Management Board of Hijinx Theatre.
