Alun Davies AM – Mid and West Wales

Alun was elected to the National Assembly in May 2007. Alun is originally from Tredegar and was educated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth.

After graduating Alun was elected President of the NUS Wales where he led campaigns against the then Conservative Government’s cuts in education funding. Following this he worked as a campaigner for WWF and Oxfam on international environmental and poverty issues which included assignments in Rwanda and the Balkans.

Alun has also enjoyed a successful and high profile career in public and corporate affairs. He was a public relations manager with the Welsh multi-utility, Hyder plc, before being appointed Head of Public Affairs at the UK Atomic Energy Authority. Following this he was appointed to the board of S4C as its Director of Corporate Affairs. Prior to his election Alun was managing director of his own business, Bute Communications. He has worked throughout Europe and the Middle East and has been a regular speaker at international seminars and conferences.

Since being elected to the National Assembly Alun has quickly established himself as an effective speaker and advocate for Mid and West Wales. His scrutiny and leadership skills were recognised when he was elected to chair the Assembly’s Rural Development sub-Committee and to chair the Broadcasting Committee where he has published influential and hard-hitting reports on issues such as poverty and deprivation in rural Wales, Bovine TB policy and the future of public service broadcasting in Wales.

He is also a member of the Finance Committee, Subordinate Legislation Committee and the Sustainability Committee. He has also gained a reputation as a campaigning Assembly Member on local and national issues from the availability of broadband and access to public transport to poverty, deprivation and the improvement of public services. He is also a Trustee of the Bevan Foundation and an occasional lecturer on Politics at UWIC.
